Dominic Calvert-Lewin appears to have missed his England World Cup chance after squandering a header against Uruguay, with Alan Shearer delivering a blunt verdict.

Recalled after five years, the Leeds striker started on the bench on Friday, came on for Dominic Solanke on 56 minutes, then headed wide from point-blank range. Speaking on The Rest Is Football, Shearer said, "Calvert-Lewin came on and missed an absolute sitter."

Ben White scored in a 1-1 draw with Marcelo Bielsa’s side, and focus turned to Tuchel’s lack of an obvious deputy for the rested Harry Kane. Shearer also lamented the shortage of centre-forwards and suggested it might have been a night for Ollie Watkins.

Gary Lineker felt neither Solanke nor Calvert-Lewin nailed down a place, stressing that strikers must take chances. Tuchel praised Solanke’s pressing and intensity, noted Calvert-Lewin took time to adjust, and said the header from around six metres is normally a clear goal.

The England boss added that playing more through the middle suited Calvert-Lewin later and that both forwards stuck to the plan. Calvert-Lewin has since been sent back to West Yorkshire as Tuchel trimmed his squad, with Solanke kept in the frame and Kane returning to face Japan this week.
