Talks over appointing Albert Riera at Eintracht Frankfurt are yet to be finalised, with a €5m clause at NK Celje a sticking point.
Kicker reports that Eintracht want to negotiate down that exit clause in Riera’s contract, while Sport Bild says the club aim to pay about €1.3m, leaving the sides far apart. Given the current state of discussions, Frankfurt’s interim training regime might remain for this weekend’s Bundesliga fixture against Bayer Leverkusen, and the reports add that Riera will then take charge.
The fee itself should not pose a significant problem for Eintracht. Even so, other factors could yet block or delay the move. The club also have alternatives and may pivot if talks with Celje prove too complicated.
Riera, 43, has never coached at this level. The former Spain international is regarded as fiery and an involved motivator.
It might simply be that Eintracht want a counterpoint to former head coach Dino Toppmöller, who was viewed as meeker and more technocratic.
