Alessio Castro-Montes was the hero for Union St Gilloise on Thursday evening in their Belgian Pro League title clash with Club Brugge. The Brussels side grabbed a 1-0 victory in Brugge that see’s them take their opponents place as top of the table. In a game that could certainly be described as feisty, it was Union who took the crucial three points. Union have been incredibly efficient to start the play-offs, taking the chances they are creating and putting in strong defensive displays at the same time.

Castro-Montes has always been one of the top full-backs in the Pro League, but this season his appearances have been reduced because of injury. His return for the play-offs is a major boost for the club, as he can produce moments of magic like he did at the Jan Breydel. So often in the past few years, Union have been the ones leading the way going into the play-offs. Now, they are, as they have termed themselves ,the hunters. Clearly, this role suits them much more and the side look to have gotten over the mental weaknesses they have showin in previous play-off campaigns.

However, they were certainly lucky in many aspects on Thursday evening. In added time, Club had plenty of chances to equalise, with Hugo Vetlesen hitting the bar with a free header from just six yards out. Club will take some confidence knowing that, on another day, they would have taken more of their chances. They will have a chance of revenge this weekend when the sides face each other again.

Union now have the title race in their hands. If they can avoid defeat to Club this weekend and then win their remaining games, they will get their hands on a trophy they have not won since 1935.
