Rumours linking the 27-year-old with an exit from Anfield first emerged early in the season, when Real Madrid’s interest came into focus again.
Then, in the winter window, concerning speculation began that Premier League rivals Manchester United had Mac Allister on their shortlist and were exploring a deal for the World Cup winner.
Mac Allister is of course still at Liverpool, but the former Brighton man has now given some insight into where he might play next.
“I would love to return to Argentinos Juniors because my dad and my brothers all grew up there and we are grateful,” Mac Allister shared to La Agusneta, via TN Sports.
The midfielder started his career with Argentinos Juniors before moving to Brighton and Hove Albion, even moving back to the club on loan initially.
He made 83 appearances for the Buenos Aires outfit, a total he is clearly keen to add to.
Mac Allister also mentioned Boca Juniors as a club he would like to return to one day, but with a contract at Anfield running until 2028 Liverpool will be hopeful they can keep hold of their no.10 for a while longer.
Any approach, be it from Real Madrid, Manchester United or a team from Argentina, will have to represent good value for Liverpool. Mac Allister would be a difficult man to replace too, so the club would want to be well compensated.
The Argentine will hope he still has a long career ahead of him, one that could one day lead back to Argentinos Juniors, but for now the focus will be on ending the season well with Liverpool.
