A friendly between Algeria and Uruguay ended 0-0 at Juventus Stadium on Tuesday night, but the occasion was marred by a late pitch invasion. According to L'Équipe, dozens of Algeria supporters entered the field at full time, creating confusion.

Some carried flags and, in some cases, flares, and players and match officials quickly made for the dressing rooms.

On the pitch, Algeria had produced a serious display, on top against a Uruguay side in difficulty. The incidents tarnished the end of an evening that had been largely controlled.

Footage on social media showed fans running towards players, some trying to approach them. The scenes drew reactions from bafflement to annoyance, and some Algeria fans condemned the behaviour, saying it shamed them and was not something seen in Algeria.

The invasion could now lead to sanctions, and authorities and organisers will have to examine the security lapses that allowed the breach in Turin. Algeria will meet Argentina in their World Cup group, while Uruguay will face Spain among others.
