Riyad Mahrez scored twice in Algeria's 3-0 victory over Sudan this Wednesday in Rabat. Despite this convincing start for the Fennecs, the Algerian captain was quick to temper expectations at the post-match press conference. He called on his team to raise their game ahead of the upcoming clash with Burkina Faso.
The Fennecs' captain opened the press conference by stressing the importance of the win for the national team. His team claimed the first match of Group E with a three-goal margin. This result puts Vladimir Petkovic’s men at the top of Group E ahead of tougher opponents. Riyad Mahrez then turned his attention to the immediate future—most notably, the showdown with Burkina Faso.
"I'm happy we got the three points, it's been a long time since we've done that at AFCON. The man of the match award is anecdotal—today it's me, tomorrow it will be someone else. But the most important thing is the win. We didn't necessarily play well, but we won, and that's what matters. We need to step up our game in four days against Burkina Faso. I have enough experience to know we shouldn't get carried away," Mahrez stated.
