Liverpool will be without goalkeeper Alisson Becker when they face Chelsea this weekend, manager Arne Slot has confirmed.
The Brazilian international started in goal for the Reds during their Champions League meeting with Galatasaray on Tuesday night.
However, his evening ended in disappointment after picking up a knock that forced him off.
The injury came in the second half when Alisson denied Victor Osimhen from close range. The goalkeeper appeared in visible pain after the save and could not continue.
He left the pitch in the 56th minute of the contest, limping heavily as he made his way towards the touchline. Summer signing Giorgi Mamardashvili was called upon to replace him for the remainder of the match.
Galatasaray had already taken the lead earlier in the first half through Osimhen. The striker converted a penalty in the 16th minute to put the Turkish side ahead.
Liverpool pushed hard but failed to find a way back into the contest. The defeat at Rams Park marked their second loss in just four days.
After the game, Slot spoke about the incident and gave a brief update on his first choice goalkeeper. He admitted that the situation was concerning and made it clear that Alisson will miss the upcoming league match.
“It is never good when a player has to leave the field in that way. “He is certainly not going to be involved on Saturday,” Slot said in his post-match interview with Amazon Prime Video
The absence of Alisson is a major blow for Liverpool, especially with the importance of their next fixture. His experience and command at the back have been vital for the team over recent seasons.
Liverpool will now turn their attention to their Premier League trip to Stamford Bridge. The encounter with Chelsea comes at a crucial stage, with the Reds eager to recover from back-to-back defeats and regain momentum in their domestic campaign.
With Alisson sidelined, Mamardashvili is expected to start in goal for the first time in the league since his arrival.
The 25-year-old will now have the opportunity to prove himself in one of the most demanding fixtures on the calendar.
