All Eyes on Julián Alvarez

Argentine forward Julián Alvarez is entering the prime years of his career. At just 26, “The Spider” has already won more silverware than some entire clubs and could very well be the most decorated active player in world football today, not named Messi. It’s time for Julián Alvarez to be firmly included in the conversation among the best in the world.

It’s hard to believe that Atlético Madrid’s star forward Julián Alvarez is only 26 years old. Since bursting onto the scene at River Plate in his native Argentina, he has done nothing but win, and win big.

In modern football, it’s rare to find a player who has claimed nearly every major title available to him at both the domestic and international levels. To date, Alvarez has won the Argentine league, Copa Libertadores, two Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, and the Club World Cup. With the Argentine national team, he has lifted the FIFA World Cup and two Copa América trophies. That is an extraordinary haul, especially considering much of it came before he even turned 24.

A quick check for World Cup betting updates will show that Argentina is once again among the favorites to win, and Alvarez will be a major factor if the nation has a repeat in its future.

Another title would put some serious strain on the shelves of his trophy cabinet. In total, Alvarez has accumulated 15 major titles across club and international football. Ironically, his brief “drought” came after his move to Atlético Madrid in 2024, a stop that increasingly feels like a transition point toward even bigger opportunities.

An Electric Path to Stardom

In an era dominated by the seemingly untouchable numbers of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, Alvarez’s rise offered a refreshing reminder: a new generation of superstars is emerging.

His journey followed a more traditional path than the current landscape, where European clubs will poach youth players from foreign countries to join their academies. At River Plate, where Alvarez played his youth football under Marcelo Gallardo, Alvarez steadily earned minutes across his first three seasons. He was part of the historic Copa Libertadores-winning side that defeated Boca Juniors at the Santiago Bernabéu. Then, in 2021, everything clicked and took off.

Alvarez exploded for 24 goals in 46 appearances that season, including a memorable brace against Boca Juniors in a 2–1 win at El Monumental. Just weeks later, he scored a hat trick against San Lorenzo as River secured the league title. By the time he left River Plate, he had tallied 54 goals and 31 assists in 122 matches, along with five titles and the South American Footballer of the Year award to boot.

That was more than enough for Manchester City to secure his signature for a reported $24 million.

The Premier League proved to be a baptism by fire, with Alvarez often playing behind Erling Haaland. Even in a secondary role, rotating between striker and attacking midfield, his quality was undeniable. He recorded 36 goals and 19 assists in 103 appearances, contributing to six major trophies.

On the international stage, his path was similarly competitive, initially sharing time with Lautaro Martínez. But during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Alvarez seized his moment. From Argentina’s final group-stage match onward, he became the starting striker, scoring four goals and playing a pivotal role in delivering the World Cup to Argentina.

Today, Alvarez is Argentina’s undisputed No. 9. With strong performances in World Cup qualifying, he is set to be one of the nation’s central figures heading into 2026.

At Atlético Madrid, Alvarez finds himself in a transitional phase. His talent often feels too expansive for a team historically built around pragmatism and defensive structure. Even so, his output has been outstanding.

Across two seasons, he has scored 46 goals in 100 appearances, a remarkable return, especially considering the system he plays in. He has delivered standout performances against elite opponents like Inter Milan, Barcelona, and Real Madrid, showcasing a level that clearly places him among the game’s elite forwards.

However, Diego Simeone’s conservative style and Atlético’s position in the shadow of Real Madrid have, at times, limited Alvarez’s global spotlight.

That may not last long.

With rumors linking him to Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Barcelona, and even PSG, Alvarez appears destined for another major move. Valued at over €100 million, his next transfer could become one of the defining stories of an upcoming transfer window, especially with a World Cup approaching.

While much of the spotlight currently falls on players like Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal, Alvarez’s résumé, consistency, and impact demand equal recognition. Few players combine elite finishing, relentless work rate, tactical intelligence, and a proven ability to deliver on the biggest stages quite like he does.

At 26, with a World Cup already secured, club success across continents, and his prime years just beginning, Alvarez is no longer just a rising star, he is a complete one.

As Messi approaches the twilight of his career, the stage is quietly being set for a new Argentine leader. Alvarez has all the tools, experience, and mentality to step into that role.

All the pieces are in place: a potential blockbuster transfer, another World Cup on the horizon, and a career defined by winning.

It’s time the football world stops viewing Julián Alvarez as a supporting figure, and starts recognizing him for what he truly is: not just among the elite, but firmly in the conversation as one of the top four players in the world.
