Unai San Sebastián, 37 and from Trintxerpe, turns Real Sociedad’s scorelines into kilometres. According to Diario Vasco, he has clocked 105 in two weeks after the 3-1 against Elche, the 4-1 at Real Madrid and the 3-3 with Oviedo.
He runs the scoreboard, 33 km for 3-3, 21 for 2-1 at home, 12 for 1-2 away. The 4-1 at the Bernabéu, amid criticism of Vinicius, left him close to marathon distance, and Sunday’s draw demanded 33 more.
He started early with 13 km, then joined the Bidasoa Half Marathon to complete the tally, taking on fluids and gels. Heat and accumulated effort made it a grind.
He had watched with his daughter at Anoeta. Guedes hit the post with an outside-of-the-boot strike in the 98th minute, a would-be 4-3 that would have meant 43 km he says he would not have finished.
There has not been a 0-0 in 25 matchdays. If Saturday’s trip to Mallorca ends goalless, his clause is to run 26 km for matchday 26, though he says a 0-1 would suit him better.
A local police officer in Errenteria, he is doing this for fun and for a cause. He supports Markelen Irria for Markel Merino, nearly 17, who has severe cerebral palsy from a gestational virus, and he is ready to run 50 km inside Anoeta to raise funds.
Inspired by content creator Milu at Deportivo, he has taken the idea onto social media. He has also floated a Bakero prophecy, saying omens point to Real winning the Copa after 0-1 at San Mamés and Atlético’s 4-0 over Barcelona, a theory he says has stirred debate in Bilbao.
