Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso issued strong message to his players following their midweek setback in the UEFA Champions League.

After suffering shock 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield ending string of impressive wins, Alonso made it clear that the "next match" is all that matters now as Madrid travel to face Rayo Vallecano on Sunday evening in La Liga.

"When people doubt the team after loss like that, all I can say is the next game is the most important" Alonso told reporters at his pre-match press conference. "We go into every match with the same mentality — to keep winning in the league"

Asked about the contrast between Madrid’s dominant display in El Clasico against Barcelona and their subdued performance against Liverpool, Alonso explained:

"We want to maintain stable level of performance but not all games are the same. Some situations are different and there’s no need for drastic judgments. We analyse, we adjust and we move forward"

He also addressed talk of arrogance among certain players:

"I’ve found dressing room full of great professionals" he said. "We’ve started new project with a lot of enthusiasm, we’re taking steps forward and that’s what gives me energy"..
