Chelsea’s summer plans have made a great start in the timely appointment of Xabi Alonso.

The new manager doesn’t technically start in his job until the 1st of July, but he will be working behind the scenes right away figuring out what his plans are for transfers, for preseason and the campaign ahead.

His first task will be watching the Blues’ games from this year and figuring out what he wants to change. He will witness the same dreadful frustrations we did all season: players lacking motivation and maturity. A squad without a Premier League level backup striker. A cluster of central defenders without any outstanding options. A similar story on the wings. Underperforming stars like Cole Palmer, and underperforming role players like Malo Gusto.

Chelsea have time and talent to make huge jump next season

There is talent there too, certainly the talent to finish higher than 9th or 10th, but there is a huge amount of work to be done. Given his name and reputation he should have no problem getting the buy-in he needs from the young squad, and under Enzo Maresca they showed they were willing to work hard for a coach they believed in.

The Basque couldn’t ask for a better buildup than he has – nearly three months of pure preparation time before the Premier League restarts. That will mean high expectations, but he has shown more than enough ability in his managerial career so far to meet them.

In other news…

Xabi Alonso is reportedly keen to change one thing at Chelsea that has been majorly holding them back in recent years.

Chelsea star Joao Pedro will not be going to the World Cup with Brazil – it’s surprising, but it’s also great news for the Blues in many ways.
