Real Madrid have officially signed left-back Alvaro Carreras from Benfica, bringing him back to the club five years after his departure.

Carreras has signed a six-year contract and will be presented to supporters on Tuesday at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid activated the defender’s release clause and will pay the €50 million fee in instalments after weeks of talks with Benfica.

The club had initially hoped to complete the deal before the Club World Cup but were made to wait until after the tournament, with Benfica insistent on keeping him in their squad for the competition.

Carreras came through Madrid’s academy between 2017 and 2020 before leaving to join Manchester United. He was named their Under-23 Player of the Year in 2022 but never made a senior appearance.

Loan spells at Preston North End and Granada followed, before he made a permanent switch to Benfica earlier this year after a strong initial loan spell.

He played a key role in Benfica’s campaign last season, helping them secure second place in the league and win the Portuguese League Cup.

Carreras’ return is a significant step in Madrid’s reshaping of their defence under new manager Xabi Alonso.

Concerns over Ferland Mendy’s injuries and doubts over Fran García’s long-term role prompted the need for reinforcements.

The 22-year-old is viewed as a natural fit for Alonso’s system and a player who can offer both defensive stability and attacking thrust down the left flank.

Madrid had previously explored a move for Alphonso Davies but were forced to turn elsewhere when he extended his contract at Bayern Munich.

His arrival follows the signings of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen and Franco Mastantuono as part of a broader summer rebuild.

The move may provide an added benefit for the club’s Champions League squad, with Carreras potentially counting as a homegrown player due to his earlier spell at the academy.

Madrid were eager to secure that advantage following the recent departures of several players developed in-house.

Carreras now returns to the Spanish capital with greater experience, higher pedigree and the opportunity to establish himself at the highest level.
