The South African under-17 national team, Amajimbos, have been eliminated from the U17 FIFA World Cup after a 3-0 defeat to Japan on Saturday.

Hiroto Asada opened the scoring for the Samurais in the 48th minute, before Minato Yoshida doubled the lead in the hour mark.

Japan put the game to bed, with Shota Fujii scoring the goal that saw the Asians advance to the last 16 of the tournament.

Despite the exit, the current crop of Amajimbos became the first batch of South African U17 players to win a match and reach the knockout stages at the global showpiece.

Meanwhile, star player Emile Witbooi scored two goals in four matches, which is likely to intensify interest in his services.
