Chelsea lost more grounds in the Premier League title race after they secured a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace on Saturday at Selhurst Park.
The Blues are now winless in their last four games, and from being title challengers, they are now fighting for a place in the top four.
Cole Palmer got Chelsea off to a flyer after 14 minutes when he netted his 13th goal in the league. Jadon Sancho provided a brilliant assist for the goal.
In the second half, the Blues wasted fantastic scoring opportunities and paid the price when Jean-Philippe Mateta scored for the home side in the 82nd minute.
Paul Merson was full of praise for Sancho after the goal, and he hailed him as “unbelievable” on Soccer Saturday for Sky Sports.
He said: “What a play by Sancho! Unbelievable play!
“The ball comes to him on the halfway line. He just dummies it. He goes that way and leaves the ball go that way, rounds the defender and he is away.
“Two defenders catch him up and he just plays in between to Palmer. Palmer takes a touch on his left six yards out and drills in the far corner. Amazing wing play by Sancho.”
The 24-year-old attacking midfielder joined Chelsea in the summer from Manchester United on loan, and has made a big impact under Enzo Maresca.
The England winger has made 14 appearances in the Premier League (started in ten of them), scoring two goals and providing four assists. His numbers can still improve, but what he has been really pleasing is that he is enjoying his football again.
The latest results will come as a blow to Chelsea’s title hopes. They are nine points behind Liverpool, who have played two games less than them.
Chelsea have made massive progress under Maresca, but they are not yet ready for the title challenge. At the same time, the Blues need to start winning games; otherwise, they could miss out on the top four.
