Manchester United have reportedly given the green light for Joshua Zirkzee to leave Old Trafford in January, but sources insist there are clear conditions attached. The Netherlands forward, who arrived from Bayern Munich last summer for £36.5m, has struggled to make an impact, netting just seven goals since his arrival.
Fraser Fletcher of TeamTalk confirms that interest in Zirkzee is building, both domestically and abroad, with West Ham leading the charge. Brighton, Aston Villa, Everton, and Sunderland have all expressed interest, the latter reportedly open to a loan arrangement. Continental clubs, including Roma, Inter Milan, and Juventus, have also been linked with potential cut-price deals, while Sevilla and Roma remain in discussions.
United’s stance is firm on transfer conditions. Permanent sales below €40m (£35m) will not be considered, but a loan deal, with or without an option to buy, is preferred. The hope is that a temporary move could increase Zirkzee’s value, potentially resulting in a summer sale that meets United’s valuation.

Should Zirkzee depart, Manchester United would gain the licence to pursue a replacement striker. Dusan Vlahovic, amid ongoing contract negotiations at Juventus, has been offered to United. With 64 goals in 159 appearances for Juventus, the Serbian forward represents a potentially lucrative option, though sources are quick to caution that a deal is far from guaranteed.
Vlahovic’s future remains uncertain. Juventus are hoping to secure a new deal, with the striker reportedly needing to take a pay cut to remain at the club. New coach Luciano Spalletti has provided optimism, but financial constraints persist. Should talks fail, Juventus are prepared to sanction a cut-price €20m (£17.5m) deal in January.
Despite this, Fletcher notes that Vlahovic is not United’s top January priority. The club remain focused on signing a new midfielder and allowing summer acquisition Benjamin Sesko to settle. Vlahovic will, however, attract interest from other Premier League clubs, including Tottenham, Chelsea, Everton, and West Ham, ensuring United may face competition if they choose to move.
While much of the focus is on Zirkzee and Vlahovic, Manchester United’s winter window could see activity elsewhere. Sir Jim Ratcliffe has reportedly given the club encouragement to bid for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, though sources indicate United are more focused on Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest. Confidence remains that a major January signing for Anderson could be finalised.
Notably, United missed out on the loan signing of a high-profile Real Madrid player due to an inability to include a key clause in the deal, highlighting the challenges clubs face in securing top-tier talent mid-season.
Gary Neville’s recent criticism of several United players underscores the pressure on squad members to perform. Fletcher confirms that the focus remains on strategic acquisitions rather than panic buys, suggesting that United’s winter window activity will be carefully measured.
Zirkzee’s departure could offer United more than just a replacement striker. It would signal a shift towards strategic recruitment and potentially free up significant financial and squad resources. However, finding a suitable replacement who can replicate the 116-goal output that Vlahovic is capable of remains a significant challenge. United’s hierarchy will be under pressure to make the correct choice to ensure their attacking output is maintained in both the Premier League and European competitions.
From a Manchester United supporter’s perspective, the Zirkzee situation is both frustrating and revealing. Signing a young forward for £36.5m only for him to struggle so visibly exposes flaws in recruitment strategy, particularly under previous management. Fans will hope that the January window allows the club to reset and bring in a striker who can consistently deliver goals, and Vlahovic presents an intriguing option.
The cautious approach to his potential signing is sensible. United supporters understand the risks of overpaying or rushing deals, and the club’s focus on midfield improvements alongside striker replacements shows a broader strategic vision. The interest in Elliot Anderson also signals that the club are looking for long-term solutions rather than temporary fixes, which will appeal to supporters seeking stability.
However, there is anxiety around whether January acquisitions can truly impact the season. With domestic rivals strengthening and European competition demanding consistency, the pressure on Ruben Amorim to make the right calls is immense. Fans will be watching closely, hoping for decisive action that balances immediate performance with sustainable squad growth.
Ultimately, this window is a test of United’s recruitment and management acumen. Zirkzee’s exit, if managed correctly, could mark the beginning of a more calculated and efficient transfer strategy, providing fans with optimism for the seasons ahead.
