Amorim’s Manchester United Taking Shape: Tactics, Tenacity and Tour Gains

Summer of Structure Begins to Pay Off

Manchester United’s pre-season tour of the United States was about much more than fitness. For Ruben Amorim, it was about clarity. In contrast to the chaos of his opening months in charge, this was his chance to engrain the structure and precision that had long defined his coaching philosophy. According to The Athletic, the head coach spent time “walking them through the exact spots to occupy when the ball is in different areas.”

These tactical drills were not mere positioning exercises. Amorim has demanded intensity, with players constantly rotating, responding and resetting based on the ball’s position. Sessions ran beyond an hour in 30-degree heat, with the Portuguese coach stopping play to shift players by a yard, even a metre, when their timing was off.

He explained the rationale himself: “Even the certainty of the movements can help a player to be faster, if you are thinking, ‘I jump, I don’t jump’. We train when they need to jump; they already know.” Amorim’s method is as much mental conditioning as physical repetition.

Coaching in the Heat of Chicago

The Endeavor Health Performance Centre became the hub for this recalibration. From 11-a-side matches testing retention to tight four-versus-four drills designed to sharpen reaction speed, Amorim’s sessions blended theory with practical execution. One session saw Bryan Mbeumo, recently arrived from Brentford and short of match sharpness, run through patterns with youth players to build rhythm and fitness. His effort drew praise after his 45-minute outing against Everton: “You can see he’s not in perfect condition physically, but he makes a lot of runs, and that can stretch a team.”

Players were pushed. Arthur Okonkwo and others worked through physically taxing circuits that disguised cardio with combinations and finishing drills. Kobbie Mainoo’s backheel, Chido Obi’s composed finishes, and Mantato’s low drives were all pieces in a broader tactical puzzle.

These moments, captured on camera and described vividly by The Athletic, illustrate how Amorim is shaping a group to think quicker, play cleaner, and respond instinctively.

Discipline Off the Pitch and Demands on It

Discipline was not confined to the pitch. United’s players were given midnight curfews, team dinners were structured, and camaraderie was built during shared workouts and post-match activities. Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Dalot and Joshua Zirkzee were among those staying behind to help teammates in recovery drills. Fernandes joked, “He never paid for a dinner! To be honest, he paid one,” after outings with Zirkzee, but the bond was evident.

Dalot’s comments also hit the right note with Amorim: “If you want to be in Manchester United, you need to match some standards.” The message to absent players and the wider squad was clear, professionalism is non-negotiable.

Off-field leadership extended to club staff. Andreas Georgson may be gone, but Acacio Valentim is filling the operations manager role with openness and energy. His visibility, even holding the substitution board during matches, is another signal of a refreshed club dynamic.

Momentum Ahead of a Defining Season

On the pitch, Amorim has re-emphasised patterns and roles. At a time when football at the top level can feel system-dominated, Amorim’s blend of structured creativity offers a compelling identity. His assistant Carlos Fernandes has been key to executing the sessions. Whether in set-piece routines, positional rondos or sprint-heavy circuits, the tempo has risen.

United’s squad now returns to Carrington, where a newly upgraded facility awaits. Chief executive Omar Berrada described it as “second to none in the world of sports,” a milestone moment in the club’s long-term modernisation.

The final word, though, came from young Leny Yoro, who embodied the new mindset: “There are a lot of people that want us to fail… But this season will be different.”

It might be.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

For Manchester United supporters, there’s something refreshing about this tour, not just in its structure, but its substance. After years of drift, there appears to be purpose behind every pass, every press, every piece of preparation.

Amorim’s fingerprints are now visible. What stood out was not just the intensity of training, but how tailored everything felt. Mbeumo, Zirkzee, even the youth players, everyone had a role, everyone had a runway. The clear tactical plan is something we’ve missed, and hearing Fernandes or Dalot speak with pride suggests the squad is buying in.

There’s still reason to be cautious. The defensive structure will be tested in the Premier League, and we’ve seen United start brightly before only to fade. But this feels different. Amorim isn’t trying to turn this team into something it’s not. He’s amplifying its strengths while building discipline. The standard is set now, and those not matching it will fall behind.

If the unity shown on tour carries into the competitive season, and the fitness levels hold, there’s every chance United will not only improve, but begin to truly contend.
