Ruben Amorim has hailed the competitiveness of his side after Manchester United drew 1-1 with Arsenal at Old Trafford.
United dented Arsenal’s faltering title hopes with a spirited performance. In the final seconds of an otherwise forgettable first half, Bruno Fernandes fired in a free-kick to open the scoring for Manchester United. The Portugal international capitalised on a deep Arsenal wall to curl his effort into the top corner.
United had chances to double their lead with David Raya forced into point-blank stops from Noussair Mazraoui and Joshua Zirkzee’s flick.
Arsenal, who had failed to score in their previous two Premier League games, again toiled in the absence of a recognised forward. An equaliser eventually arrived on 74 minutes, as Declan Rice wrapped a finish into the far corner from Jurrien Timber’s cutback.
Moments later, Rice was forced into a last-gasp challenge on Rasmus Hojlund with the Dane in on goal. United then had chances to win it late on in a frantic finish, as Raya made a superb double stop to frustrate the home side.
The draw does little to improve the league prospects of Amorim’s side, who remain 14th, but there were plenty of positives in the performance.
“It helps when you score a goal and don’t suffer [conceding first], you can feel the energy in the stadium,” Amorim reflected, speaking to BBC Match of the Day.
“In this moment, we try to win games, be compact. We were so near in the second half to score a goal. We were really competitive and I think that is important. We pushed forward and not back. We had some situations to win the game.
“Arsenal put a lot of men inside the box to win and I think Alejandro Garnacho did a complete game and that helped us a lot.”
