Manchester United will welcome Mason Mount back to team training this week following his 12-week spell on the sidelines, as per Laurie Whitwell.

The £50 million signing has endured some of the most torrid injury luck a player could have since he swapped Stamford Bridge for Old Trafford in 2023, which has seen him limited to just 32 appearances in all competitions – and only nine Premier League starts.

His most recent outing came from the off in the Reds’ derby triumph over Manchester City on December 15, though Mount was hooked after 14 minutes with a hamstring complaint. Given that it was the latest setback in a host of unrelenting fitness issues, the club have regulated his recovery carefully, avoiding any early return to action to try and prevent another layoff.

Time will only tell whether such methods have worked, though, and the decision now ultimately lies on Ruben Amorim as to how much he’ll utilise the 26-year-old when he’s officially back available; Thursday’s clash with Real Sociedad will likely come too soon for Mount to feature.

On the other hand, United may opt to wait until after the international break to reintegrate him into the mix. The side travel to face Leicester City this Sunday evening in a 7pm kick-off, after which they won’t play until April 1 when they take on the Champions League-chasing Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Despite playing only six times under Amorim, Mount earned high praise from the head coach last November.

“Mason Mount… I have to tell you I love that kid,” said Amorim. “You can look in his eyes that he wants this so bad. And this is the most important thing for me.

“I know he was suffering from injuries, he was not on the pitch, but now he’s trying to stay fit, and we hope he can continue to be fit, to show all the talent that he’s shown, for example, in Chelsea.”

“He played in this system [before], so it’s perfect for him,” the head coach continued. “I have two positions for Mason Mount, so he should be very happy!”
