Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker says Ruben Amorim needs to change the way he plays in certain games if he has a chance of succeeding at Manchester United.

United have had a dreadful start to the season, losing at home to Arsenal, being held by Fulham last weekend and then losing on penalties to Grimsby of League Two in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

Amorim favours a 3-4-3 formation with two players in central midfield, two wing-backs and three up front and behind.

Parker, who enjoyed success under Sir Alex Ferguson in United’s golden years, believes Amorim needs to change his tactics depending on who they are playing against.

The former England defender told Hayters TV in association with Betting Apps India: “The manager has definitely been let down by players, but you have to look at him, too. Even though I’m a fan of his, you have to look at him and ask questions and I think that it comes to a point that if you’re doing something as a manager and it’s not working, you have to change it.

“If you run a business and something’s not working and you’re not selling your products, you’ve got to tweak it and you’ve got to try and make it better.

“You have to improve it and then maybe you can add something to it once you get yourself rolling again. He’s not even willing to do that.”

The former defender thought that the Red Devils had turned a corner after they played well in their loss to Arsenal but the two recent results against Fulham and Grimsby have showed sings of familiar weaknesses.

“I saw something different in the Arsenal game. I saw something really good and something better than I’d seen in a while and I looked at it there and then maybe I should have thought about it a little bit more, remembering that it’s Arsenal.

“They are not the most attacking side in general play, they don’t really play with a high tempo, they’ve not really got athletes in midfield who run past people and I got fooled by that really, I would say.

“Then they played their next game at Fulham and started well, but they had a few issues on that side of it and last night against Grimsby was just about energy levels, (opposing) players catching them out.”
