Andrée Jeglertz’s side welcome Liverpool to the Joie Stadium on Sunday 3 May, with kick-off scheduled for 12:00 (UK) in what is our final home outing in 2025/26.

We enter the clash at the division’s summit and aiming to edge closer to the title with three precious points.

But we know we’ll have to be at our very best to collect our 17th top-flight win of the term.

And with the help of Opta, we’ve taken a deep dive on the side that will be in our way…

RECENT FORM

Liverpool have lost just one of their last six matches in all competitions, although that defeat came in their previous outing when suffering a 1-0 reverse to West Ham at home.

That loss to the Hammers could have a significant impact on the relegation play-off race with the Reds now just one place and one point above the east Londoners in 10th place.

However, after losing their first six WSL matches this season, the Reds have performed well to drag themselves away from the automatic drop zone and they still hold their top-flight destiny in their own hands.

Of their 17 points this season, five of those have been collected on the road.

MANAGER

City’s opponents will have a familiar face in the dugout this weekend with Gareth Taylor making a return to the Joie Stadium as Liverpool boss.

Under Taylor’s tutelage from 2020 to 2025, the Blues lifted the FA Cup and League Cup and also matched our best ever WSL points tally in 2023/24 – narrowly missing out on the title on goal difference.

He was then appointed to the Liverpool helm in the summer of 2025 – and after a tricky start to life on Merseyside - a recent upturn in form has seen them open a sizeable gap over Leicester City at the foot of the WSL table.

PREFERRED FORMATION

Throughout the season, Liverpool have often utilised a 4-1-4-1 formation but have been fluid by interchanging into a 4-2-3-1.

Fuka Nagano has anchored the midfield across 18 top-flight outings this season, meanwhile, forwards Mia Enderby and Cornelia Kapocs have featured in every WSL match in 2025/26.

Between the sticks, Jennifer Falk has played nine matches, Faye Kirby has featured eight times and Rafaela Borggrafe has three outings to her name.

January signing, Falk, started their previous outing against West Ham, and the stopper ranks 10th across the division for save percentage with the Swede thwarting 70% of attempts faced.

HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD

We have lost just four of our 19 WSL matches with Liverpool, winning 13 and drawing two.

Across those clashes, City have scored 38 times in fixtures with the Merseyside outfit – averaging at two goals per meeting with the Reds.

Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw has also enjoyed facing Taylor’s team, with the Jamaican scoring 10 goals in seven WSL outings against them across her time with the Blues.

Elsewhere, Vivianne Miedema has plundered nine in nine outings against Liverpool throughout her time with both Jeglertz’s side and Arsenal.

In October’s reverse fixture goals from Iman Beney and Aoba Fujino helped City come from behind to win at Anfield.

HOW THEY ATTACK

Liverpool’s overall goal tally in the WSL this season of 20 is the second lowest across the division, but they are out-performing their expected goals metric.

So when they do create chances, they often find the back of the net with opportunities taken clinically.

In terms of possession, their average of 48.2% is eighth across the division – meaning City may have plenty of the ball at the Joie Stadium on Sunday.

Beata Olsson is Liverpool’s top goalscorer with six top-flight goals – although she hasn’t found the net across her past four club outings in all competitions.

HOW THEY DEFEND

Perhaps unexpectedly for a team competing at the lower end of the table, Liverpool’s WSL total goals conceded of 30 is the sixth best defensive record in the division.

In fact, their tally is 11 less than bottom of the league Leicester and West Ham in 11th who have each conceded 41.

However, Liverpool have faced the third-highest number of shots in the top-flight with a tally of 223 – suggesting their defensive unit often produce heroic efforts to prevent efforts finding the net.
