Anderlecht will be joining Sint Truiden, Club Brugge and Union St Gilloise in Europe next season. After a 3-1 victory at home against Sint Truiden on Thursday night, the 34 times Belgian champions have ensured they pick up a European ticket for next season. The side will enter the Europa League during the qualification rounds. Should they get knocked out, they will have a second chance of European football via the Conference League. Last season Anderlecht squandered their chances of European football by failing to reach the league phase of the Conference League.
It has been a strange season for Anderlecht, with plenty of drama off and on the pitch. They now have a new sporting director in place for next season, and Antoine Sibieski will have plenty of work to do if he wants to get Anderlecht competing for league titles with Club Brugge and Union in the future.
Whether Jeremy Taravel is the right man for the job also remains to be seen. He did at least take the side to the cup final and secure European football, with the latter being the bare minimum required for Anderlecht to register this season as decent. The financial benefits of European football should help Sibieski carry out whatever plans he has to rebuild Anderlecht this summer.
