Alexis Mac Allister Transfer Talk Dismissed as Liverpool Midfielder Prepares for Andoni Iraola Return

Alexis Mac Allister is back in the rumour mill. That tends to happen when a top player loses a major final, has two years left on his deal and plays for a club entering a new era. The latest line was that he had told teammates he had played his last game for Liverpool, with Real Madrid mentioned and an £85 million fee doing the rounds.

For now, that all looks like noise.

Mac Allister’s father, Carlos, has moved quickly to shut it down. His message was simple and direct, there have been no talks and there is no agreement building in the background. He said, “We have not spoken to any Real Madrid official, what is being circulated about us holding talks with Real Madrid is not true,” and added, “Alexis is still on a two-season contract with Liverpool.

“Currently, he’ll get some rest for a few days and then go back to playing in the Premier League, that’s the current situation.”

Real Madrid rumours lack substance

This is how these stories usually work. A high-level midfielder is available in theory, a European giant is attached to the name, then the valuation appears. In this case it was £85 million. That may sound plausible in the modern market, but plausible is not the same as true.

Liverpool are not in the market to weaken themselves voluntarily, particularly after appointing Andoni Iraola. Mac Allister has been one of the few consistent high-end performers in midfield and replacing that profile late in the window would be expensive, complicated and unnecessary.

Andoni Iraola wants continuity

Iraola has hardly sounded like a coach preparing to lose him. His public line was clear: “I think Alexis has been one of the best at this club in years. Look at the World Cup, it’s normal other clubs want the best players. Other clubs want my good players, but I am looking to sign players than lose the ones we have here.”

That is the rational position. New coaches need stable pillars. Mac Allister is one of them.

The immediate issue is physical, not contractual. After going deep into the World Cup, Mac Allister is due around three weeks off and is expected back in mid-August, shortly before the Premier League opener at Newcastle.

Iraola acknowledged the timing problem, saying: “I think the most difficult situations logically will be Alexis and Victor because they played until the end of the tournament, so I think they deserve their holidays and some rest also.

“I hope they have time to at least train with us a little bit, but it is true that it will probably affect the beginning of the season a little bit.

“We cannot only think in the short term and the first game against Newcastle; we have to also understand, especially in the case of Alexis, who played a lot of minutes during the season and a lot of minutes in the World Cup, that they deserve this rest. All the others should be fine to arrive in perfect conditions to the first game.”

That sounds like squad management. It does not sound like a transfer briefing.
