André da Silva scored from a retaken penalty for Elche against Athletic Club after his first attempt involved two touches. As reported by as.com, the episode has thrown fresh light on a recent law clarification.

Elche were awarded a spot-kick in minute 65 after Lekue fouled Valera. Da Silva found the net but had contacted the ball twice, so the referee ordered the penalty to be taken again.

After the well-known Julián Alvarez penalty in the Champions League against Real Madrid, which was not retaken, IFAB clarified that when a double touch is accidental and the ball goes in, the kick must be repeated rather than a direct offence. If the penalty is missed, an indirect free-kick is given.

The penalty was retaken and Da Silva converted in minute 68 to equalise at 1-1.

After the match, he said he had realised the double touch, that it reminded him of Alvarez, and he was relieved the rule change helped his team. He added he is used to giving his best and was happy it worked out.
