Andreas Christensen faces Barcelona ultimatum as club sets final contract terms

Deco has done a great job in renewing the contracts of key FC Barcelona players in recent seasons. However, what has not happened yet is the club reaching an agreement on a renewal with Andreas Christensen, who is currently out injured.

Now, as per MARCA, the Catalan club has taken a firm stance over the future of the Dane, with the club now placing what is described as a final renewal offer on the table. Barca do not intend to improve the proposal and want a response soon, making it clear that the situation cannot drag on much longer.

The context behind that decision is easy to understand. Christensen’s current contract is running down, while injuries have once again complicated his season. He has hardly featured at all for the Catalan club in the last couple of seasons.

Even so, Barcelona are still willing to offer him a way forward. The proposal on the table is said to be a two-year contract, but with significantly reduced fixed wages. Christensen would receive roughly half of his current salary as a base, with a series of performance-related bonuses that could raise his earnings depending on how often he features.

That is where the club’s caution becomes most obvious. The offer includes bonus thresholds linked to appearance rates, and Barcelona are also said to have inserted a protective clause allowing them to terminate the deal after the first season if Christensen does not reach a minimum participation level.

From Barcelona’s point of view, it is a practical compromise. They still value Christensen’s qualities when fit, but they are no longer willing to assume the same financial risk without guarantees. This now looks like a take-it-or-leave-it moment.

Unless the defender accepts the club’s final terms soon, Barcelona appear ready to move on and explore other solutions in defence. As for Andreas Christensen, it would be a shame if a promising career at the club comes to a premature end, but he will always be remembered for his contribution in the 2022/23 season.
