Manchester City head coach Andree Jeglertz spoke in his pre-match press conference about captain Alex Greenwood missing upcoming matches through injury – and admitted that she will be a “massive loss”.

“Of course, it’s a massive loss to lose your captain, a great player and great leader,” said Jeglertz.

“This is what it’s about for the rest of the group to manage that.

“I’m not worried that it will be a challenge in the coming weeks. We will always miss Alex when she’s not on the field, but at the same time, others will feel they need to take a bigger responsibility, and I think that is key.

“It shows the group is strong because I don’t need to tell them that. It gives the team the challenge of figuring out how to deal with it.”

Alex Greenwood: absent for a “short period”

Greenwood missed last weekend’s win over West Ham United, with the coach confirming afterwards that it was due to injury, although he gave few other details.

However, the club’s official website has said that the Lioness will be absent for “a short period”, and in the meantime she will join Mary Fowler and Lily Murphy on the unavailable list due to their ongoing recovery and rehabilitation.

Fowler is recovering from an ACL injury sustained earlier in the year, while Murphy suffered a serious shoulder injury on the opening day of the season, which required surgery.

Their report suggests that Greenwood’s will be a longer absence than those of Lauren Hemp, Grace Clinton and Sydney Lohmann, who Jeglertz said are en route to full matchday fitness.

He emphasised that the squad were making good progress, saying: “Of course, [there are] a couple of players not training who are on a longer rehab plan.

“Otherwise, [it was a] full week with more sessions, and we’re in a good place at the moment.”

Manchester City travel to Goodison Park to play Everton on Sunday, 9th November.
