Enzo Maresca’s decision to rest Moises Caicedo against Burnley paid off

Joe Cole has heaped praise on Andrey Santos after the Chelsea midfielder deputised for Moises Caicedo in the 2-0 win over Burnley.

Santos was handed a start in midfield at Turf Moor on Saturday after Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca opted to rest Caicedo following his exploits for Ecuador during the international break.

Speaking after the game, Cole singled out Santos after being impressed by how smoothly the midfielder filled in for Caicedo.

“He was outstanding, it wasn’t much on the ball, he was very tidy and very efficient.

“But off the ball, we questioned ‘how would Chelsea react without Caicedo today because of the things that he can do and blocking runs and breaking down play.

“He was absolutely outstanding. Every time there was a bit of danger he sniffed it out.

“Sometimes players have a natural ability with this and he seems to be one of them players.

“Now Chelsea have got Enzo, Lavia, Caicedo and Santos as well. Is there a collection of four midfielders better in the league? I don’t think there is.”

Such was Santos’ dominant midfield performance against Burnley, Maresca was afforded the luxury of resting Caicedo completely ahead of games against Barcelona and Arsenal.

Now faced with a welcome selection headache moving forward, the Chelsea boss revealed his message to Santos before kick-off.

"Be ready. Andrey [Santos] is doing very good,” the Italian said. “Today is a tough game, he is not playing much. It is not easy when you don't play a lot."
