Ange Postecoglou says he wants to win silverware and ‘create something special’ after being unveiled as Nottingham Forest’s new manager ahead of Saturday’s trip to Arsenal.
The Australian, who guided Tottenham Hotspur to their first silverware in 17 years before his surprise dismissal, admitted he had not expected his next role to come so quickly.
“You’re never really sure when the next opportunity will arise, and it happened, and I’m really excited,” he told reporters.
“It’s great to be back in the Premier League, in charge of a club with such great history. I’m a firm believer they’re on their way up, and it’s a great place for me to be.”
Postecoglou replaces Nuno Espirito Santo, who was sacked earlier this week, and revealed that talks with owner Evangelos Marinakis developed rapidly.
“Quickly is the word,” he added. “It all came to a head on Monday. The owner got me in a good moment, I’d just done the school run, and that’s a great motivator to get back to work.”
Winning remains his clear objective. “I want to win trophies, that’s what I’ve done my whole career, and that’s what I want to try and do here,” he said.
“Every club wants to be successful, but what I’ve seen since the owner took over is that those ambitions are backed up with actions, and that’s good conditions for me.”
The 60-year-old was quick to distance himself from comparisons with legendary Forest boss Brian Clough, who led the club to two European Cups.
“There will never be any comparisons with me and Brian Clough,” he insisted. “He’s a standalone. If I can bring similar joy that he brought to this football club and this city, I’ll be a happy man.”
His reign begins with a tough test at Emirates Stadium, where Forest face Arsenal.
“It is what it is – our first four games are away, so I had a good look around the stadium today because I won’t see it for a while,” he joked.
“Every Premier League fixture is challenging. Mikel (Arteta) has got them off to a great start, they’ve strengthened over the summer, and they’re a great team.”
Postecoglou acknowledged that supporters will take time to warm to him but stressed that respect must be earned.
“They won’t love me from the first day – it’s something I have to earn,” he said “If we can tap into the connection this club has with its community, we can create something really special.”
