Former Arsenal academy defender Joseph Olowu has achieved promotion to League One with Doncaster Rovers, though the centre-back remains out of action through injury.

Ex-Arsenal youngster Joseph Olowu left north London for Doncaster back in 2021, joining Doncaster Rovers in League One.

It was a difficult start for the defender, with Rovers suffering relegation to League Two in his first campaign. They’ve spent two more seasons in the division, finishing 18th and then 5th – missing out on promotion in 2024 after a play-off semi-final defeat.

But it’s third time lucky for the side, with a win over Bradford City at the weekend confirming a top-two finish and automatic promotion back to League One.

The team can even win the title with victory in their final game against Notts County next Saturday, May 3rd.

Sadly, 25-year-old Olowu hasn’t been able to play much of a role in the latter stages of Doncaster Rovers’ promotion push.

After earning his spot as a guaranteed starter and making 39 appearances by early March, the former Gunner suffered a season-ending injury requiring surgery.

Olowu is at least off crutches now, and he joined the team to celebrate promotion over the weekend. But he may well have played his final game for the club, with no update on whether or not he’ll accept Rovers’ contract extension offer.

The ex-Arsenal man has already turned down one offer, and if he doesn’t accept the new one he’ll be a free agent this summer.

Olowu wasn’t the only former Arsenal academy player to be promoted over the weekend, with Arthur Okonkwo achieving the same feat with Wrexham to step up into the Championship.
