Anthony Patterson faces a pivotal summer as Sunderland’s goalkeeping picture sharpens, despite his attachment to his boyhood club, with Robin Roefs strengthening his hold on the number one shirt.
According to Sunderland Echo, Patterson, 26, wants a permanent move that offers regular football, though a loan cannot be ruled out if the market becomes complicated. Sunderland are understood to value him at £eight million to £10 million, and there is hope from the player’s side that the club will be realistic if a Championship move arises.
That price could stretch most Championship budgets, and Millwall may be one to watch if promoted, with a structured deal making a move more achievable. Southampton are keen, but plans could hinge on Aaron Ramsdale, who has two years left, and if they go up and the current Newcastle United loanee stays, any switch could be complicated. Coventry City, West Brom, Hull City and Derby County are also monitoring.
An academy graduate, Patterson played a major part in Sunderland’s climb from League One to the Premier League. He signed a long-term contract in September 2023, tying him to the club until 2028. Any fee would be favourable from an SCR perspective, with the homegrown goalkeeper classed as pure profit in accounting terms.
Roefs, 23, has attracted interest after an impressive campaign as first choice. While only a major offer would be entertained, the possibility of a summer departure cannot be dismissed. Some suitors may prefer to assess him for another season as a Premier League number one.
If Roefs were to leave, Sunderland would seek a direct replacement, which could delay any Patterson exit depending on timing and availability. Patterson is not thought to be viewed as next season’s number one even in that scenario. Ellborg is considered comfortable cover.
