FLW looks at Anthony Patterson's estimated weekly wage as talks over a departure from Sunderland grow

Anthony Patterson's time at Sunderland looks to be coming to a close, after spending the latter half of the 2025/26 campaign on loan at Millwall.

The Sunderland academy graduate was a mainstay in the Black Cats squads that secured promotion from League One to the Championship and then from the second tier to the Premier League. However, like many of his teammates, the top flight was deemed a step too far.

The purchase of Robin Roefs to provide competition resulted in Patterson being phased out completely, after the Dutchman quickly established himself as one of the premier shot-stoppers in the division.

Now, the 26-year-old looks to be leaving permanently, as there doesn't seem to be a possibility that he can usurp Roefs from the starting eleven.

There's no shortage of interest from top Championship sides in Patterson, though. Alongside Millwall, where he spent last season, Wrexham and Wolves, who will have promotion ambitions, are being cited with interest in the former promotion-winning keeper.

How much Anthony Patterson is said to earn at Sunderland

Patterson's current Sunderland deal, which he signed in the summer of 2023, doesn't run out until 2028, meaning he still has two years left.

Crucially, though, when the Black Cats secured promotion to the top flight, the 26-year-old's estimated weekly wage didn't increase, per Capology.

Indeed, Patterson is said to be earning £10,000 per week on his current Sunderland contract, a figure he was earning during his time in the Championship.

Millwall were said to cover all of that during his loan spell in the latter half of the campaign, which didn't prove to be too much of an issue financially, with nine other players at the Den estimated to be earning more per week.

Wolves, Wrexham and Millwall won't have an issue covering Anthony Patterson's wages

The estimated wages that Patterson is said to be on will be incredible news for the Championship suitors, as, even if the 26-year-old commands a bit of a wage hike, they'll still be able to foot it.

The Sunderland shot-stopper has plenty of Championship experience, more importantly, playing for teams near the top of the table. Of the four second-tier campaigns he's played in, three of them have seen him play in the play-offs.

He may have ended his time at Millwall on a bit of a sour note, coming up with a crucial error to help Joe Gelhardt make it 2-0 to Hull City in the play-off semi-finals and put the game out of sight, but the six clean sheets in 14 league games at the Den were still a brilliant return.

Therefore, it's no surprise to see Patterson linked with plenty of clubs who are expected to challenge for promotion, and with all three likely to be able to meet the reported £8 million asking price (albeit Wolves and Wrexham more likely to be able to than Millwall) and the expected wages, it may be down to the keeper himself as to where he plays his football next year.

Alex Neil's side could have the advantage there, due to his successful loan spell in the second half of the campaign, but with Wolves' position as a recently relegated side, and Wrexham's ambition, there are luring factors from all three.
