France attacking midfielder Antoine Griezmann (33) has surprisingly announced his international retirement this Monday morning. Griezmann has earned 137 international caps for France, logging 44 goals. Only Olivier Giroud, Thierry Henry and Kylian Mbappé scored more goals for France. With Les Bleus, Griezmann has won the 2018 World Cup. Griezmann notably restored France’s lead from the spot against Croatia in the final. The Atlético de Madrid midfielder also won the 2020-2021 UEFA Nations League for France. It is an astonishing development and the end of an era considering Griezmann has been a mainstay for Didier Deschamps’ France since his breakout 2014 World Cup.

It is with a heart full of memories that I close this chapter of my life. Thank you for this magnificent tricolor adventure and see you soon“, Griezmann wrote on his socials. France national team coach Didier Deschamps will announce his squad this Thursday for Les Bleus‘ upcoming Nations League games against Israel and Belgium, and Antoine Griezmann won’t feature.
