Antoine Griezmann has long been Athletic’s scourge, striking 15 times in 37 meetings, more than against any other side. As reported by as.com, with the Frenchman heading to MLS, San Mamés in effect bids farewell to its most punishing visitor.
The latest chapter came on 25 April in Atlético’s 3-2 comeback at the Metropolitano. It began on 5 December 2010, a 19-year-old completing Real Sociedad’s 2-0 win, then creating an own goal in a 2-1 loss at San Mamés.
From Zubieta to the Calderón and Metropolitano, he kept returning to hurt Athletic, scoring three times in his last four derbies as a txuri-urdin. His first Atlético hat-trick arrived at San Mamés on 21 December 2014, and his 100th Atlético goal sealed a 1-0 league win there in October 2022.
Valencia follow on 14, then Real Madrid, Getafe, Celta and Sevilla on 12. Ernesto Valverde has repeatedly warned that Griezmann drifts everywhere, is hard to pick up and tends to score against Athletic. Former Real coach Philippe Montanier described coaching him as a joy, praising his composure and refreshing attitude under pressure.
Iñigo Martínez highlighted his early game intelligence and resilience. Koikili Lertxundi noted his knack for arriving unnoticed, feinting, controlling first time and finishing from the right spots. Ander Capa called him smart, complete and increasingly ruthless with age, with goals always on his mind.
