Álvaro Arbeloa has broken his silence on the Negreira case, saying the most serious scandal in Spanish football remains unresolved.
Until now he had not been asked during his first three weeks in charge of Real Madrid. Friday’s judicial declaration by Joan Gaspart brought the case back into focus, and, according to El Periódico Mediterráneo, Arbeloa’s line mirrors the Bernabéu stance after Barcelona’s formal Super League withdrawal on Saturday.
Florentino Pérez has called it the most serious scandal in football history, while Arbeloa framed his remark within Spanish football. The difference does not alter the club’s position.
He spoke before Madrid’s trip to Mestalla on Sunday at 21.00. He will be without the injured Bellingham and Rodrygo, and the suspended Vinícius, who collected his fifth booking just before returning to what may be his most hostile ground.
In their absence, opportunities open for Gonzalo and Brahim, and for Carreras to return at full-back after Camavinga started ahead of him against Rayo, a decision that stirred debate this week. Asked if the club had raised concerns over those calls, he said no.
His decision to grant two days off after that match also drew scrutiny. The game was rescued by a Mbappé penalty in minute 100. Arbeloa argued the squad had only had two days off since he arrived and highlighted Antonio Pintus’s planning to justify the Monday and Tuesday rest.
