Despite being in contention for a treble, Inter finished the 2024/25 campaign empty-handed.

Indeed, Napoli beat them to the Scudetto, while Paris Saint-Germain demolished them in the Champions League final.

For former manager Simone Inzaghi, it was the worst possible way to go.

However, for those who have stayed, it could serve as powerful fuel – a painful reminder that drives them to come back stronger.

At least that’s what Lautaro Martinez expects from his teammates.

Though the road to redemption isn’t straightforward, this team has often proved their doubters wrong.

Perhaps the Club World Cup could form the backdrop for Inter’s return to prominence.

It’s a fresh start, a clean slate after the club turned to ex-treble winner Cristian Chivu for help.

Needless to say, the Argentine superstar will be Inter’s leader on the field again.

“Every time a competition begins, Inter knows it has to go all the way, as far as possible – that must be clear,” El Toro stated.

“Of course, there will be difficulties because this is a new competition, and there are teams from all continents.

“Therefore, it will be something special. We’re working well, even though we’ve had little time to prepare after the international break.

“We have some young guys here who can really help us. It’ll be great for them to be part of our group.”

Meanwhile, the 27-year-old admitted he held talks with new Inter manager Cristian Chivu.

“I spoke with the coach on the phone beforehand, and we talked a bit about his ideas on the game and on work.

“We’re very much aligned because we think the same way.

“He’s a coach who wants to win with that kind of mentality, and that’s something we really like.”

Asked how much he can give to the team after winning the World Cup, Lautaro replied: “A lot.

“What’s happened before was tough, but there’s no time.

“We have to turn the page and focus on this new competition that’s about to start and is very important.

“Of course, what happened will still be in our minds, but there’s no time.

“We need to focus on preparing well for the next match, which will mark the start of a new competition – one that’s important for us.”

“We have to be mentally strong and bounce back immediately by absorbing the coach’s ideas.”
