Lautaro Martinez has been named as Inter Milan’s outstanding performer in yesterday’s Serie A win over Empoli.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, hail the captain’s decisive display. They also criticize Mehdi Taremi, but praise substitute Marko Arnautovic.

There is a sense that Inter captain Martinez is finally starting to find his best form.

The 27-year-old had been struggling for goals over the first half of the season.

However, at the start of 2025, he has finally started getting on the scoresheet with some regularity again.

Martinez did so in spectacular style against Empoli yesterday. He gave Empoli keeper Devis Vazquez little chance with a perfectly-placed long-range effort.

That goal from Martinez broke the deadlock in what had been a tough match for Inter up to that point.

But it was not just that one goal which was decisive from the Inter captain.

Martinez was the Nerazzurri’s brightest player on the night overall.

The Argentine was both aggressive and technically polished from the first whistle. At times he looked downright unplayable, and always looked the likeliest player to make something happen for Inter.

Martinez was the player who took Inter’s first four shots of the match.

On the other hand, the Gazzetta single out striker Mehdi Taremi for some criticism.

The 32-year-old worked hard and did manage to link up play at times.

However, Taremi was unable to offer any kind of real threat in the Empoli penalty area.

The defenders were able to marshal the Iranian international well. He needed the ball to feet, and lacked the pace and movement in the area to get in behind the Empoli backline.

On the other hand, the Gazzetta hail Marko Arnautovic for a very sharp-looking second-half cameo.

The Austrian capped that substitute display off with an assist for Marcus Thuram for Inter’s third goal.
