An Argentine defender could be heading to Anfield.

The future of Ibrahima Konate at Liverpool is increasingly uncertain, with the situation surrounding his contract now becoming one of the club’s most pressing concerns ahead of the summer.

Konate’s current deal is moving towards its final stages, and as things stand there has reportedly been no significant progress made on an extension. That lack of movement has naturally raised questions about whether Liverpool can realistically secure his long-term future at Anfield.

Recent reporting from journalist David Ornstein has only added to the growing concern within the fanbase. He has indicated that, from Liverpool’s perspective, the situation is not trending positively, with negotiations appearing either stalled or not advancing at the required pace to suggest optimism.

As a result, there is a growing expectation in some quarters that Konate could leave the club on a free transfer if no agreement is reached before his contract expires. For Liverpool, that would represent a significant setback, particularly given his importance in the defensive structure when fully fit and in form.

Konate has established himself as a key part of Liverpool’s back line, valued for his pace, physical dominance, and ability to defend in transition. Losing a player of his profile without a transfer fee would not only weaken the squad but also create a major recruitment challenge.

If no breakthrough is reached soon, Liverpool will be forced to plan for life without him, identifying and securing a replacement capable of matching his athletic profile and defensive impact at the highest level.

But who could that be?

In a summer where Liverpool are already embarking on so much change, yet more big profile departure is just going to cause more upheaval.

Thankfully, Jeremy Jacquet is already coming in. Ifeanyi Ndukwe will provide more depth but he should not be expected to play a major role for the upcoming season.

Jacquet could be seen as the direct replacement for Konate. However, Liverpool will probably needs to add a more experienced figurehead in order to improve their depth.

And for that role, only one player makes sense.

According to Matteo Moretto, Liverpool are showing 'a lot of interest' in Marcos Senesi recently, with whom contact has already been made by the Reds. Spurs are also at an advanced stage but Liverpool could hijack the deal.

And this is a move that would make so much sense because Senesi is a player with so much experience and he could be the perfect centre-back option he - who would also be capable of replacing Trent's creativity and build-up.

He has averaged the most progressive passes (14.89 per 90 minutes) in the entire Premier League this season. He's the only centre-back who ranks amongst the top 10 players in the Premier League for open play expected assists (4.59), which is just below Florian Wirtz (4.78).

And he's doing this playing in a deep centre-back role and being the playmaker for Bournemouth.

The fact that he is available on a free transfer, just makes him the natural choice to replace Konate who is also leaving on a free.

Senesi will likely demand much less wages while he'd also bring important experience and could be a better fit for Arne Slot's style of play.

Importantly both Richard Hughes and Slot know him well. The Dutchman coached him at Feyenoord meanwhile the club's sporting director brought him to the Premier League.

So, Senesi really seems like a no-brainer and inevitable at this point as the only choice who could replace Konate. Which is why the Argentine is coming to Anfield.
