Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised his players’ mentality after a dramatic 3-2 victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park. It was a contest that had everything, from moments of control to complete chaos, ending with a decisive strike from a teenager who has already written his name into the club’s history.
Rio Ngumoha, aged just 16 years and 361 days, became Liverpool’s youngest ever scorer when he netted the winner deep into stoppage time. His goal came at the end of a breathless encounter in which Newcastle, reduced to 10 men after Anthony Gordon’s dismissal, clawed their way back from two goals down.
Ryan Gravenberch opened the scoring midway through the first half, before Gordon’s red card altered the contest. Within seconds of the restart, Hugo Ekitike doubled Liverpool’s advantage. Yet Newcastle, refusing to yield, hit back through Bruno Guimaraes and William Osula. With the home support in full voice, Liverpool required composure. Ngumoha provided it, calmly finishing to secure three points that Slot admitted owed as much to resilience as to footballing finesse.
“It felt familiar to me; I think I have experienced a game like this once before since I’m here in England – that was Everton away last season,” Slot said, reflecting on the chaotic scenes. “It was an unbelievable atmosphere and for us to stay strong in that atmosphere for such a long time is worth more to me than when we play every single time out from the back and we have a four or five-nil win.”
For Slot, these are the results that define a campaign. Liverpool were pinned back at times, surviving a barrage of set-pieces, corners and long throws. He emphasised how Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker and Ibrahima Konaté held firm under relentless pressure, creating the platform for Ngumoha and Harvey Elliott to come on and change the game.
One of the more striking tactical adjustments saw Dominik Szoboszlai deployed at right-back. Primarily a midfielder, the Hungarian adapted impressively to an unfamiliar role. Slot noted, “Talking about mentality, it is not easy to play as a full-back if you’ve only been a midfielder in your career… For him to put in a performance like that, you can say a lot about his mentality.”

Szoboszlai’s versatility underlines Liverpool’s squad depth, and his willingness to adapt illustrates the culture Slot is building at Anfield. It is not just about tactical systems, but about character and responsibility.
Asked whether such victories contribute to winning championships, Slot was pragmatic. “That is the last thing I think about in this moment, if I’m honest. Winning away at Newcastle then you definitely need to have quality, especially in an atmosphere like this.”
While he may downplay title talk, there was little disguising the significance of Liverpool’s latest triumph. It was another marker in Slot’s reign, one shaped by adaptability, resilience and a collective mentality that continues to carry them through difficult moments.
