Flamengo midfielder Arrascaeta has sustained a medium-grade injury to his right calf and is awaiting Uruguay’s decision on a possible replacement.

According to Globo.com, he reported discomfort during Tuesday’s training session and scans confirmed the issue.

Before the scan results, AUF president Ignacio Alonso struck an optimistic tone, saying they hoped he could be involved but that there was no confirmation.

Under FIFA regulations, injury replacements are permitted up to 24 hours before a team’s first match. Uruguay open Group H against Saudi Arabia on 15 June in Miami, with Spain and Cabo Verde also in the group. Any replacement must come from the preliminary list.

A medium-grade injury implies a longer recovery. The case is similar to Neymar, who is also recovering from a calf problem, but he has not been cut by the CBF.

Arrascaeta had already been racing to return from a fractured clavicle sustained in May during a Libertadores match. The calf injury is unrelated.
