Flamengo, who had the most call-ups in Brazil, will get early returnees after Uruguay’s group-stage loss to Spain at the World Cup. Arrascaeta, Varela and De la Cruz are due back ahead of others, while Brazil, Ecuador and Colombia reached the knockouts.
According to Globo.com, the trio receive 10 consecutive days of holiday, counted from when they leave the Uruguay delegation. They will then report to Ninho do Urubu, and Jardim is unlikely to have them in Portugal, with a projected return on the eighth of July.
The club are finalising on Saturday the players’ logistics for leaving the United States. They may continue with their families or head straight back to Rio de Janeiro. Despite time off, they could choose to return early to the training ground, as Léo Ortiz and Saúl did.
Arrascaeta stayed on the bench against Spain and did not play due to a calf issue suffered late in preparation. He has been working with a Flamengo physiotherapist and should be in playing condition on his return. Varela started every match and De la Cruz came on in all three.
Flamengo fly on Sunday to the Algarve for a mid-season camp, returning to Rio on 12 July to end the break at the training centre. Three friendlies are scheduled, against River Plate on the third, Lausanne on the eighth and Benfica on 11 July.
