Arsenal are already plotting a potential £100 million move for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali ahead of the summer transfer window, according to the Sun.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is a huge admirer of the Italian and is keen to pair the Magpies star with Declan Rice at the Emirates Stadium club.

Tonali was linked with a move to the Gunners yesterday following Mikel Merino’s injury and while the rumours had no legs, something could happen in the summer.

Newcastle could miss out on Champions League football next season after an underwhelming Premier League campaign so far, which could see a move to join Arsenal appeal to Tonali.

Manchester City and Chelsea also want the 25-year-old, and while the Magpies are not looking forward to selling him, lack of European football could force them to cash in.

Newcastle ending the season without silverware could also deal a blow on their chances of holding on to Tonali and other top stars, and league leaders Arsenal are monitoring the situation.

He joined the Toons in a £55m deal from AC Milan in 2023 but has signed a new contract, which runs until 2029 with the option for an additional 12 months.

Newcastle will want at least £100m for him from suitors if the Italian wants to move on, and Arsenal could be ready to do business.

Merino, Martin Zubimendi and Ethan Nwaneri (on loan at Marseille) are all options for Arteta in the middle of the park.

However, the Spaniard loves quality competition in his squad having strengthened his attack with enough stars last summer.

As a result, a big-money move for a midfielder next summer cannot be ruled out and Tonali could be back in the conversation after the rumours on the winter transfer deadline day.
