Arsenal were “not good enough” to avoid defeat against West Ham United in the Premier League, according to club captain Martin Odegaard.
The midfielder made the honest admission after the north London outfit fell to a Jarrod Bowen goal on the stroke of halftime at the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners, who took plenty of shots but created few chances worth writing home about, ended the contest with ten men after Myles Lewis-Skelly received a red card in the 73rd minute.
Odegaard felt that Arsenal, depleted by injuries to their frontline, were below the required standards in many facets of the game.
“I don’t think we played on our level,” the Norway international told Premier League Productions. “The performance was not good enough.
“We struggled to break through and create the big chances we normally create. We lacked efficiency in the final third – the final pass, arriving in the box. We let them run too easy. It wasn’t good enough.
“We have to find solutions and make sure we improve to strike back straight away. We have to focus on the players that are available, we have enough quality to do more than we did today.
“We have to be sharper and better around the box. And the goal we concede is too easy. There are things we can work on.”
The result is a massive blow to the Premier League title hopes as it leaves them eight points adrift of leaders Liverpool. But Odegaard promised Arsenal will continue to fight for top spot.
“It’s no time to feel sorry for ourselves,” he insisted. “We’re going to be ready to strike back and make sure we do better. We lost today and we’re disappointed but there is a long way to go.”
On the side’s mounting injuries, Odegaard told BBC Match of the Day: “We have players missing but we have players here who are good enough and available so we have to focus on that. It wasn’t good enough in front of the goal. With the red card, it was tricky as well.”
