Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Eberechi Eze after hijacking Tottenham’s move for the Crystal Palace star.

Eze looked set to join Spurs but Arsenal have made an 11th-hour move to sign the 27-year-old after Kai Havertz suffered a knee injury.

Arsenal have an agreement in principle with Palace over a deal worth around £68million, and are close to agreeing personal terms with Eze.

Arsenal have accelerated talks over Eze and he favours a move to Emirates Stadium. Eze is being lined up for a medical on Friday, Standard Sport understands.

Spurs had been in talks over Eze since last week but now look set to miss out on their top transfer target, in what is another public embarrassment in the transfer market.

With James Maddison set to miss the majority of the season after suffering an a serious knee injury and Dejan Kulusevski also facing a significant spell on the sidelines, Spurs have been keen to add some more creativity to the squad.

Missing out on Eze is a major blow for Spurs and leaves them scrambling for alternative options before the window closes on September 1.

Palace manager Oliver Glasner said on Wednesday that Eze would start their Conference League play-off first leg against Fredrikstad on Thursday, but it now remains to be seen if the midfielder will be involved.
