Arsenal’s meeting with Leeds United at the Emirates on Saturday carries more than the usual early-season significance. Victory would not only maintain momentum after the opening-day win at Old Trafford, it would also extend an extraordinary home record that stretches back almost 15 years.
Mikel Arteta’s side are unbeaten in their last 42 home matches against newly promoted opposition, winning 37 and drawing five.
The last time a promoted side left north London with three points was Newcastle United in November 2010.
Should Arsenal avoid defeat against Leeds, they will match Chelsea’s record of 43 consecutive home league games without losing to a newly promoted side, set between 2001 and 2015.
Leeds arrive encouraged by their opening victory over Everton, but history is stacked against them. They have lost their last six meetings with Arsenal and have not begun a Premier League campaign with back-to-back wins since 2002.
Daniel Farke’s squad has been reinforced with the arrival of Noah Okafor from Milan, yet few would consider them favourites to end Arsenal’s imposing streak.
