Arsenal have made it a priority to tie down William Saliba this summer and, according to the latest reports, they are edging closer to agreeing a contract extension. Since establishing himself in 2022, Saliba has become the cornerstone of the Arsenal backline, buoyed by his defensive solidity and composure on the ball.
He signed his current deal in 2023, but Andrea Berta and Arsenal have made it a priority to extend his contract this summer, even though he still has two years remaining. Transfer speculation also provides the Gunners with an incentive to complete a deal as quickly as possible.
According to a report by Sporting News’ Chris Wheatley, the Gunners have reached a breakthrough in talks with Saliba over a new deal. They are reportedly edging closer to agreeing a new long-term contract which would see him join the likes of Bukayo Saka as one of the club’s top earners.
This comes as transfer speculation continues to surround his future. Real Madrid’s interest has been well documented throughout the summer, putting Arsenal at risk of losing a key player. More recently, there have been indications that he will soon put pen to paper, as the player himself gave a positive update during the tour of Asia.
If Saliba commits his future to Arsenal, he will join Gabriel, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri in signing long-term deals this summer. The Frenchman has struck up a formidable partnership at the back with Gabriel, and fans will be hoping they continue for many years to come.

Arsenal will have enjoyed a very successful window if they manage to secure Saliba’s signature. Alongside the aforementioned trio who have signed new deals, the Gunners have also strengthened extensively, adding quality across multiple positions on the pitch.
Some of those new signings were in top form in their recent game against Athletic Club, providing supporters with confidence ahead of the new campaign.
