The job was more than done inside half an hour, Arsenal racing out of the blocks and putting four past their League One opponents in the first third of the match.

Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli got the Gunners up and running, both assisted by Eberechi Eze, before an own goal from Jack Hunt and a calm finish from Gabriel Jesus had Arsenal running riot.

Wigan avoided any further damage in the remainder of the match, but it was an ideal afternoon for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Matt Verri was at the Emirates to rate the Arsenal players...

Kepa Arrizabalaga 7

Sharp save to deny Taylor after a rare Arsenal lapse in defence. Also quick off his line when Wigan did briefly threaten in behind. Largely stress free afternoon as expected for the cup goalkeeper.

Ben White 6

Willing runner as ever up and down the right wing but did not enjoy much success on the overlap, rarely getting the pass. One strange hooked pass into his own box nearly played Wigan in.

William Saliba 7

Straight back into the starting lineup after illness. Cruised around the pitch without breaking a sweat. Won all three of his duels and gave Taylor nothing. Replaced after an hour with the job done.

Cristhian Mosquera 8

Did not really have to do much at the back. Dominated his one-on-one battles and completed 96% of his passes. Came close to scoring too, but superb defending stopped him having a free header.

Myles Lewis-Skelly 5

Calafiori’s injury frustratingly denied him a chance in midfield. Tidy in possession but beaten for pace on one wing by Borges Rodrigues and then booked for hacking down Costelloe on the other. Looks slow running back.

Christian Norgaard 7

Brilliant ball over the top for Jesus’ goal. Had more touches than any other player and pinged several great long passes around the pitch. Dropped into defence late on and booked for mistiming sliding challenge.

Eberechi Eze 8

Ran the show early on with two brilliant assists, taking full advantage of the space on offer. Got into plenty of good positions in the second half but execution of final pass or shot was not quite there.

Bukayo Saka 7

Surprising late addition to the starting lineup and got a rare outing in midfield. Combined nicely with Madueke and Eze and offers something different in a central role. No really telling contribution and replaced at half-time.

Noni Madueke 8

Ran Wigan ragged. Lovely calm finish opened the scoring and his cross led to the third goal. Created four chances in the first half alone and the visitors could not deal with him. Had a lot of fun.

Gabriel Jesus 7

Typically nonchalant dinked finish when played in by Norgaard. Spent a lot of time drifting out to the left wing, where he was not hugely effective. Deeper role off Gyokeres in the second half gives Arteta something else to consider.

Gabriel Martinelli 8

Continues to love the cups. Electric pass to get away and then finish for the second goal, and should have had a brace when Tickle saved his header late on. Had the beating of his man every time.

Substitutes:

Viktor Gyokeres (Saka 46’) 6

Unfortunate to hit post with drilled finish towards near post shortly after coming on. Otherwise disappointingly quiet against poor opposition, having only seven touches.

Marli Salmon (Saliba 61’) 6

Home debut for the 16-year-old, first in the centre of defence and then on the right. Solid on the ball and not really called upon defensively.

Leandro Trossard (Madueke 61’) 6

Really sharp cameo, twisting and turning on the left wing and firing one brilliant ball across the face of goal.

Martin Zubimendi (White 79’) 6

Great clipped cross when drifting to the left wing, Martinelli should have put it away.

Tommy Setford (Kepa 87’) N/A
