Arsenal are on the verge of abandoning their pursuit of Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, according to A Bola.
Negotiations between the two clubs for the Sweden international have reached a critical impasse due to Sporting’s uncompromising stance on transfer terms.
The Portuguese outfit are insisting on a higher fixed fee and fewer add-ons than previously discussed.
Arsenal believed they had met Sporting’s requirements with an offer of €65 million plus €15m in bonuses.
However, Sporting have reportedly raised the bar, demanding €70m as a fixed fee and only €10m in bonuses.
Off the back of yet another second-place finish in the Premier League, Arsenal had identified Gyokeres as a top striker target.
The club’s willingness to offer a package worth €80m underlines their ambition, but Sporting’s insistence on a higher fixed fee has forced them to reassess alternative options.
After going three days without communication with their Primeira Liga counterparts, Arsenal’s patience is wearing thin, and Sporting’s rigid position may ultimately prevent the deal from materialising.
With talks currently at a standstill and neither side willing to budge, Gyokeres’ proposed switch to the Emirates Stadium appears close to collapsing unless a breakthrough is made soon.
The 27-year-old’s return to Sporting for pre-season has been postponed multiple times, and he is still expected to leave this summer.
In the wake of recent developments, Arsenal could revive their swoop for Benjamin Sesko, while Ollie Watkins could also be considered.
