Viktor Gyökeres led the line for Sweden in their recent match against Slovenia, a fixture that ended in a 2-2 draw. The spotlight was firmly on him and fellow striker Alexander Isak, as the national team showcased the attacking options available to them. Gyökeres started the match, while Isak, having only recently returned to training after a lengthy absence, began on the bench.
From Arsenal’s perspective, there would have been little concern about Gyökeres featuring. The striker is still working towards full fitness, having missed much of pre-season amid his transfer saga. Playing competitively for Sweden offered valuable minutes that should aid his return to peak condition.
Sweden can now boast two leading forwards representing major Premier League clubs. For Arsenal supporters, seeing Gyökeres start for his country is a source of pride, reflecting the esteem in which he is held. Although he did not get on the scoresheet against Slovenia, his overall display drew praise, particularly for his physical presence and link-up play.
The draw leaves Sweden with work to do in their push for World Cup qualification. Gyökeres is determined to play a central role in that journey, and performances of the type he delivered against Slovenia will strengthen his claim to be the national team’s first-choice striker.

His performance did not go unnoticed at home. According to Football Skanalen, “Very strong when the cross came and held it away and passed the ball to Ayari, who netted. Strong, unyielding, and loyal, and did a great job. Often had two opponents on him.”
Such assessments underline the attributes that make Gyökeres a valuable asset, both for club and country. His ability to occupy defenders, create opportunities for teammates, and work tirelessly off the ball has become a hallmark of his game.
Arsenal fans will take encouragement from his display, as it signals a player who is regaining rhythm and sharpness after a disrupted summer. For Sweden, the hope is that he can continue to deliver performances of this quality to help guide them towards next year’s World Cup.
