Arsenal teenager Ethan Nwaneri continues to make a mark in the Premier League after the youngster scored his latest goal this weekend.
Mikel Arteta evidently saw something in the 17-year-old and he was right to give him an opportunity, which he has grabbed with both hands this season.
Nwaneri was handed his debut when he was just 15, but he’s coming of age of now during a breakout campaign, making 12 appearances in the top flight.
The youngster scored three times in the League Cup to help the Gunners reach the semi-finals, which he followed that up with his first league goal against Nottingham Forest in November, and has had three outings in the Uefa Champions League.
With Bukayo Saka out injured, Nwaneri was handed just the second league start of his fledgling career when Arsenal travelled to Brighton on Saturday – and it took him just 15 minutes to repay Arteta’s faith in him.
Mikel Merino released the winger with a pass from midfield and he took off, racing into the space vacated by the Seagulls defenders. Without hesitation he bore down on goal and took his chance, placing the ball under the body of Bart Verbruggen and into the net.
It was a fantastic moment for Nwaneri, but it was also one that sees him join a small band of footballer to score multiple Premier League goals before their 18th birthday.
Only five players had done that before: Wayne Rooney (7), Michael Owen (5), Danny Cadamarteri (3), James Milner (3) and Federico Macheda (2).
That list is a bit of a mixed bag, but if he has anything like the careers of Rooney, Owen and Milner, then Arsenal fans would be delighted.
Unfortunately it wasn’t all good news for the young man, who was taken off at the interval with a muscular issue. Hopefully he recovers swiftly, as Arsenal missed his presence in the second half and failed to hold out for the win.
