When Kai Havertz scored Arsenal’s opening goal against Southampton on Saturday, the focus was rightly on adding another and securing all three points.

The Gunners had fallen behind just minutes earlier, so they didn’t have time to dwell on what was an excellent finish from Havertz for 1-1.

Yet the goal is certainly worthy of some recognition, both in its own right and due to the circumstances surrounding it.

Not only did Havertz’s latest goal get Arsenal back into the game, it also allowed him to equal the all-time record for goals in consecutive games at the Emirates Stadium.

Robin van Persie set that record in 2011/12, scoring for seven games in a row at the Emirates. Havertz has now matched that feat:

  • May 19th – Goal vs Everton (Premier League)
  • August 17th – Goal and assist vs Wolves (Premier League)
  • August 31st – Goal vs Brighton (Premier League)
  • September 25th – Goal vs Bolton Wanderers (League Cup)
  • September 28th – Goal vs Leicester City (Premier League)
  • October 1st – Goal vs Paris Saint-Germain (Champions League)
  • October 5th – Goal vs Southampton (Premier League)

Havertz now has the chance to set a new record in Arsenal’s upcoming games, with Shakhtar Donetsk the next to visit the Emirates Stadium on October 22nd.

If the German international doesn’t feature in that game, he’d instead have the chance to break the record against Liverpool that weekend on October 27th.

The former Chelsea man is in top form at his new club’s home ground, and his goals almost feel inevitable now.
