Arsenal will look to steal an early advantage against Real Madrid when they collide in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie on Tuesday (8pm).
Arsenal (4-3-3):Raya; White, Saliba, Kiwior, Lewis-Skelly; Rice, Odegaard, Partey; Saka, Trossard, Martinelli.
Although time does appear to be running out on Arsenal’s Premier League title bid, they did actually manage to close the gap on runaway leaders Liverpool last weekend.
Already 12 points adrift, the Gunners appeared to lose more ground when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Everton, only for the Reds to be beaten at Fulham 24 hours later.
Mikel Arteta’s side now switch their focus to the Champions League, where they look to dethrone the reigning champions.
It will be a tough task for Arsenal, but they have lost just once in this season’s competition, while only Inter (0.2) have conceded fewer goals per game (0.6).
Having made two substitute appearances since his return from a hamstring injury, Bukayo Saka should be reinstated to the starting XI for this one.
Martin Odegaard, Thomas Partey and Gabriel Martinelli could also return after starting the Everton draw on the bench, though Leandro Trossard may continue to lead the line following his well-taken goal at Goodison Park.
Nevertheless, Arsenal remain without Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Magalhaes.
Riccardo Calafiori and Takehiro Tomiyasu are also injury absentees, with Raheem Sterling missing out through suspension.
It is safe to say Lewis-Skelly has enjoyed a breakthrough season to remember.
The academy graduate only made his senior Arsenal debut in September, but has subsequently become a regular feature under Arteta.
He then made his mark on the international stage, scoring on his full England debut against Albania in Thomas Tuchel’s first match at the helm.
Somewhat unfortunate to concede a penalty at Goodison Park on Saturday, Lewis-Skelly’s impressive displays should see him keep his place at left-back against Madrid.
Doing so would see him become only the second English player after Jude Bellingham to start a Champions League quarter-final. Ethan Nwaneri would also achieve the feat if he is named from the beginning by Arteta.
